Patreksfjörður is a major fishing village in the southern Westfjords of Iceland, situated along the fjord that shares its name. The settlement was named after Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Örlygur Hrappsson, one of the region's earliest settlers. During the 16th century, the location served as a vital base for English, German, and French fishermen and merchants. Modern growth was significantly driven by the establishment of a commercial fishing fleet in the early 20th century. Today, Patreksfjörður is home to a comprehensive infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and a modern port central to the export of fish products. The surrounding area is famous for its spectacular natural attractions, such as the massive Dynjandi waterfall and the red sands of Rauðasandur beach. The town also serves as a gateway to the Látrabjarg bird cliffs, the westernmost point of Iceland and Europe. Local culture is enriched by various museums and frequent community events.
