Körös-Maros National Park (Hungary)

Weather…

The Körös-Maros National Park is located in the southern Great Plain of Hungary and was established in 1997 to protect the unique steppe and river landscapes. It covers an area of approximately 511 square kilometers and consists of several spatially separated sub-areas between the Körös and Maros rivers. The landscape is characterized by vast alkaline steppes, remnants of the former Puszta, as well as dense floodplain forests and wetlands along the river courses. One of the park's most significant tasks is the protection of the Great Bustard, one of the world's heaviest flying birds, whose most important population in Europe lives here. Botanically valuable are the stands of Hungarian sage and various rare orchid species on the loess ridges. The park also houses the Réhely visitor center, which provides information on the ecological importance of Pannonian flora and fauna. The region is also culturally and historically interesting, as it has preserved the traditional pastoral lifestyle of the Hungarian lowlands.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is typically approached from major towns in southeastern Hungary, which serve as central hubs for visitors. Local roads easily connect to the various wetland and puszta sectors of the reserve.
📅
Best season
Autumn is the premier time to visit in order to witness the spectacular crane migrations across the wetlands. Spring is equally rewarding for spotting numerous other migratory bird species returning to the plains.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is predominantly flat, characterized by expansive puszta and marshy wetlands. Walking paths are generally easy and level, though they can become muddy after significant rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof boots are highly recommended when exploring the marshy areas, especially during wet seasons. Bringing a high-quality camera and binoculars is essential for the incredible birdwatching opportunities.
🅿️
Parking
Dedicated parking areas are typically found near visitor centers and at the start of major nature trails. Finding a spot is usually straightforward, except perhaps during peak bird migration weekends.
⚠️
Safety
Mosquito repellent is an absolute necessity due to the extensive wetlands and standing water. Stick to marked trails to avoid disturbing nesting birds and to stay out of overly boggy areas.
⏱️
Time needed
Visitors generally spend anywhere from three to six hours birdwatching and walking the flat trails. Serious nature photographers often dedicate a full weekend to capture the dawn and dusk wildlife activity.
