Sheung Yiu Lime Kiln (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

The Sheung Yiu Lime Kiln is a significant industrial heritage site located within the Sai Kung Country Park in Hong Kong. It was built in the late 19th century as part of the fortified Sheung Yiu Village, established by the Wong clan, a Hakka family originating from Guangdong. The kiln played a central role in the village's economy, as the residents specialized in the production of lime by burning seashells and coral harvested from the nearby shores. This lime was a crucial material used in the construction industry and as a fertilizer for local farmers. The industry flourished for several decades but eventually declined following the introduction of modern cement, leading to the village's abandonment in the 1960s. In 1981, the site was declared a statutory monument and subsequently converted into the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum. The well-preserved kiln, alongside the village's grey-brick houses and drying threshing floor, has a fascinating look into the traditional Hakka architectural style and the coastal livelihoods of old Hong Kong.
