Best season
The prime bird-watching season spans from November to March when thousands of migratory waterfowl and shorebirds arrive. Spring and autumn migration periods also offer excellent opportunities to see rare species passing through.
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to observe active birds, especially during low tide feeding. Checking the tide schedule before your visit is recommended, as viewing conditions depend heavily on water levels.
Etiquette
Always stay on marked paths and viewing platforms to avoid disturbing the sensitive vegetation and nesting sites. Feeding the birds is prohibited, and maintaining a respectful distance of at least 30 meters is essential.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars (at least 8x magnification) and a spotting scope are essential for detailed viewing of birds from a distance. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended as the trails are often wet and muddy.
Getting there
The reserve is located in the northwestern New Territories near the border with Shenzhen. It is usually reached by bus or taxi from Sheung Shui MTR station; advance permission from the managing authority is typically required for entry.
What to expect
Bird watching requires plenty of patience - sit quietly and wait for the birds to become active again. Often 20 to 30 minutes pass without a sighting before a flock suddenly appears; plan for at least two hours.
