Fort Dauphin (Haiti)

Weather…

Fort-Liberté, originally known as Fort-Dauphin, is one of the oldest cities in Haiti and home to significant historic fortifications. The town is situated on a deep bay in the northeast, providing a convenient natural harbor that has been used strategically since the 16th century. The main fort was constructed in 1731 under French rule to protect the colony from Spanish incursions coming from the neighboring side of the island. Its architecture is defined by massive stone walls and well-positioned gun embrasures that remain visible today. On November 29, 1803, Haiti's Declaration of Independence was signed here, making the site a sacred ground of national history. The town was renamed after independence to celebrate the newly won freedom. Despite its remote location, Fort-Liberté preserves a quiet, colonial atmosphere with appealing streets and sweeping views of the bay. The surrounding mangroves also provide a vital ecological sanctuary for local wildlife.
