Forêt des Pins is a vast forest reserve located in southeastern Haiti, renowned for its stands of the endemic Hispaniolan pine. Spanning the slopes of the Chaîne de la Selle mountain range, it constitutes one of the most critical ecological zones in the nation. The forest sits at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,500 meters, creating a cool, misty environment that contrasts sharply with Haiti's lowland heat. This unique highland ecosystem supports a wide array of specialized flora and fauna, including many bird species found only on Hispaniola. Historically covering much larger areas, the forest has been significantly threatened by illegal logging and subsistence farming practices. Conservation programs are currently focused on protecting the remaining primary growth and implementing reforestation to prevent further soil erosion and preserve the region's vital water sources.

Access to this rare high-altitude pine forest involves driving up steep, winding mountain roads. Most visitors rent a sturdy 4x4 vehicle to comfortably handle the very rough terrain.

The dry winter and spring months are generally the safest times for the drive and offer crisp, pleasant air. Summer rains can frequently make the mountain access routes quite dangerous.
