Nismes is a settlement in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region of Guyana, positioned on the West Bank of the Demerara River. The village takes its name from the French city of Nîmes, reflecting the colonial history and the influence of European settlers in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Historically, Nismes functioned as a major sugar estate before evolving into a communal village following the emancipation period. It is situated just south of Bagotville and is administered as part of the La Grange-Nismes Neighborhood Democratic Council. The geographic setting along the riverbank was historically crucial for the export of sugar and other agricultural commodities via water transport. In the modern era, Nismes is a diverse community where residential areas coexist with agricultural plots dedicated to cash crops. The local infrastructure features educational facilities and religious sites that cater to a multi-ethnic population. As part of the developed coastal belt, Nismes remains closely linked to the economic and social activities of Region 3.
