Leonora is a historically significant village in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region (Region 3), located on the West Coast of Demerara in Guyana. Named after the children of a former Dutch plantation owner, Leonora was for over a century a major hub for the sugar industry. The Leonora Sugar Estate and its factory were central to the community's identity until the factory's closure in 1986. Today, the village has evolved into a modern center for sports and administration. It is home to the Leonora National Track and Field Centre, Guyana's first state-of-the-art athletics facility, which hosts major national and international sporting events. The village is ethnically diverse, with a strong Indo-Guyanese presence reflected in its cultural and religious life. Leonora’s strategic location along the main highway to Parika makes it a key transit point for commuters and goods. Despite the transition away from sugar production, the village remains an economically lively area with thriving small businesses and educational institutions, blending its industrial past with a modern future.
