The Ziama Massif is an ecological jewel in southeastern Guinea. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it protects one of the last remaining tracts of primary Upper Guinean rainforest. The region is known for its extremely high humidity and dense vegetation, providing a sanctuary for endangered species, most notably the elusive African forest elephants. Hiking through the massif is akin to an expedition into a forgotten world. Beneath the giant forest canopy, one finds an incredible variety of orchids, ferns, and bird species. The terrain is hilly and often shrouded in thick mist, giving the forest a mysterious aura. Nearby are the traditional villages of the Toma people, whose culture and spiritual life are deeply rooted in the forest. Protecting the forest is a challenge, as local communities rely on its resources. Visitors support the preservation of this ecosystem through eco-tourism. The best time to visit is during the drier phase from December to March, though it is never truly dry in the rainforest. Reaching the massif requires endurance and usually starts from Macenta or Nzérékoré.
