Bissau Cathedral

The Bissau Cathedral, formally known as the Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Candelária, is the primary Roman Catholic place of worship in Guinea-Bissau. Construction of the current structure began in 1935 on the site of an earlier 19th-century church, but it was not completed until 1950 during the height of Portuguese colonial rule. The cathedral's architecture is a notable example of Neo-Romanesque style adapted to the colonial context, featuring two prominent square towers that dominate the skyline of the historic Bissau Velho district.
