Fortaleza de São José da Amura
The Fortaleza de São José da Amura stands as the historical and military cornerstone of Bissau, strategically overlooking the Geba River estuary. Originally established by the Portuguese in 1696, the fortification was intended to secure trade routes against rival European powers and local resistance. After falling into ruin, it was extensively rebuilt starting in 1753 under the direction of Governor Raymundo Armas. The fortress features robust walls constructed from local reddish laterite stone, embodying classic colonial military engineering. Throughout the 20th-century struggle for independence, it functioned as the command center for Portuguese colonial forces. Today, the site serves as the headquarters for the Guinea-Bissau Armed Forces. Its most significant interior feature is the mausoleum of Amílcar Cabral, the revolutionary leader and intellectual architect of the nation's independence, whose remains are interred here alongside other national heroes. While public access is often restricted due to its ongoing military function, it remains the preeminent symbol of the country’s transition from a colony to a sovereign state.
