💡 Tips
- Stoupa is known for having actual sandy beaches, unlike much of the Mani region, making it great for families.
- Kalogria Beach can get quite crowded in mid-summer, so arrive early to claim a spot or rent a sunbed.
- Rent a bicycle or walk along the paved coastal path that connects Stoupa to the neighboring fishing village of Agios Nikolaos.
- Explore the small cave at Kalogria Beach where Nikos Kazantzakis reportedly wrote parts of Zorba the Greek.
- There is a large free parking area just off the main road, but the narrow streets leading to the beaches can get congested.
🍽 Food
Head to the seafront tavernas overlooking Stoupa beach for the catch of the day.
Try the robust local salad made with potatoes, oranges, olives, and syglino pork.
Grab an artisanal gelato from the parlors lining the beachfront promenade for a hot afternoon treat.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Numerous shops along the promenade offer high-quality beachware, hats, and snorkeling gear.
Look in the small supermarkets for jars of local spoon sweets (glyka tou koutaliou) and jams.
Go to the quieter, slightly rockier southern end of Stoupa for a more relaxed sunbathing spot.
Take a short uphill walk to the ruins of the Frankish castle overlooking the town for peaceful views.
Water temperature…
Stoupa stands out from other Mani villages due to its two excellent sandy beaches: Stoupa Beach and Kalogria. Kalogria is particularly famous as the place where author Nikos Kazantzakis lived in the early 20th century. Here, he worked with the real-life Georgios Zorbas at a nearby mine, an experience that later inspired his world-renowned novel 'Zorba the Greek.' Today, Stoupa is a family-friendly destination with a waterfront promenade lined with tavernas and cafes. The village sits at the foot of the Taygetos Mountains, offering striking sunsets over the Messenian Gulf. A paved cycling and walking path connects Stoupa to the neighboring fishing village of Agios Nikolaos. It is lively during the summer months and good for nature lovers in the spring and autumn.
