Nestos Delta (Greece)

Weather…

The Nestos Delta in Northern Greece, situated south of the cities of Kavala and Xanthi, is one of the most significant river deltas in the Balkans. The Nestos River (known as Mesta in Bulgarian) originates in the Rila Mountains and flows 230 kilometers before reaching the Aegean Sea opposite the island of Thassos. Spanning an area of approximately 450 square kilometers, the delta features a diverse range of habitats including lagoons, freshwater lakes, and extensive sand dunes. An ecological highlight is the Kotza Orman, a remnant of a once-vast riparian forest that is now strictly protected. As a designated Ramsar site and part of the Natura 2000 network, it supports over 300 bird species, including pink flamingos and the rare spur-winged lapwing. The mixing of nutrient-rich river water with the sea makes the delta a critical nursery ground for various fish species. Historically, the delta has been a crossroads of cultures, evidenced by the diverse heritage of the surrounding regions. Preserving this complex ecosystem is vital for the ecological balance of the Northern Aegean Sea.
