Bourtzi Castle (Greece)

Weather…

Bourtzi Castle in Nafplio is a distinct Venetian water fortress located on the islet of Agioi Theodoroi in the middle of the harbor. Designed by the Italian architect Antonio Gambello and completed in 1473, its primary purpose was to safeguard the strategic port from pirates and naval invaders. The name 'Bourtzi' is derived from the Turkish word for tower or stronghold. The fortification is masterfully integrated into the islet's rocky terrain, featuring a prominent central tower and several semi-circular bastions. During the 19th century, the castle had a dark history as the official residence of the state executioners, who were barred from living within the city of Nafplio. In the 1930s, the structure was briefly converted into a hotel by German architect Schaub before transitioning into a protected historical landmark. Today, it is accessible via short boat rides from the waterfront and serves as a scenic venue for cultural festivals and concerts, remaining an enduring symbol of Nafplio.
