Lion Gate (Mycenae) (Greece)

Weather…

The Lion Gate of Mycenae is the most iconic monument of the Mycenaean civilization and the primary entrance to the Bronze Age citadel. Constructed around 1250 BC, it serves as a supreme example of Cyclopean masonry, featuring massive limestone blocks fitted together without the use of mortar. The gate itself consists of four gargantuan monoliths, topped by a decorative relieving triangle that lightens the weight on the lintel. Within this triangle is a relief of two lions (or lionesses) standing in a heraldic pose flanking a central column, which is widely considered the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe. These figures were likely symbols of the power and divine protection of the Mycenaean kings, including the legendary Agamemnon. The gate has remained standing for over 3,200 years, a testament to the engineering prowess of the period. Today, it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and a poignant reminder of the heroic age of Greek mythology and history.
