Gaios is the largest village and the administrative center of the tiny island of Paxos. Its harbor is unique, sheltered by the two small islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, giving it the appearance of a narrow river or fjord. A Venetian fortress and a windmill stand on Agios Nikolaos, guarding the entrance. The town itself is a collection of pastel-colored Venetian buildings and narrow alleys leading to a spirited central square. Gaios is a favorite stop for yachts cruising the Ionian Sea. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet laid-back, with many fish tavernas and cafes lining the waterfront. As Paxos lacks large-scale hotel developments, Gaios has maintained its exclusive, village-like charm. From the harbor, small boats depart daily for the neighboring island of Antipaxos, famous for its Caribbean-style turquoise beaches. The surrounding hills are covered with ancient olive groves, some of the oldest in Greece. The best time to visit is between May and September. Access is primarily by hydrofoil (Flying Dolphin) or ferry from Corfu Town or Igoumenitsa on the mainland.
