Ancient Messene, located in the southwestern Peloponnese, is one of Greece's most remarkably preserved archaeological sites and a triumph of ancient urban planning. The city was founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas following his victory over the Spartans at the Battle of Leuctra. Its primary purpose was to liberate the Messenians from centuries of Spartan rule and establish a powerful rival stronghold. The site is renowned for its massive nine-kilometer-long fortification walls, featuring numerous towers and gates, with the Arcadian Gate remaining a highlight of military engineering. Inside the walls, visitors can find a grand theatre, a well-preserved stadium, and the Asclepieion, which functioned as a religious and social center. Because the ruins were never built over, Messene provides an unparalleled look into the architecture and daily life of the Hellenistic and Roman eras.
