Amvrakikos Gulf (Greece)

Weather…

The Amvrakikos Gulf is one of the largest semi-enclosed gulfs in Greece, located on the northwestern coast between the regions of Epirus and Aetolia-Acarnania. The gulf is connected to the Ionian Sea via a narrow strait only 600 meters wide at Preveza. The area is an ecosystem of international significance and is protected under the Ramsar Convention, as it features extensive lagoons, salt marshes, and reed beds. Particularly important are the Logarou and Tsoukalio lagoons, which provide vital nesting and resting grounds for over 250 bird species, including the rare Dalmatian pelican. The waters of the gulf are also home to a significant population of bottlenose dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles. Historically, the gulf was the site of the famous Battle of Actium in 31 BC, a naval engagement that determined the fate of the Roman Empire. Today, the region is renowned for its traditional fishing methods and the production of high-quality shrimp. The combination of rich history and pristine nature makes the Amvrakikos Gulf a unique geographical asset.
