It serves as the official seat of the Ya Na, the overlord of the Dagomba people, playing a central role in the traditional governance structures of northern Ghana. Geographically, Yendi is situated on the eastern edge of the country, near the border with Togo, and functions as a vital agricultural trade hub for grains and yams. The town has a significant colonial history, having been part of German Togoland before passing to British administration following World War I. Yendi is the stage for major cultural celebrations, such as the Damba Festival, which honors the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and the local chieftaincy lineage.
