It was completed in 2008 in time for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and has a seating capacity of approximately 21,000 spectators. The stadium is known for its modern architecture and the distinctive roofing over the main stands. In 2017, it was renamed in honor of Aliu Mahama, the late Vice President of Ghana, who hailed from the northern region. In addition to football matches, the facility is used for athletics competitions and large-scale cultural events. The playing field consists of high-quality natural grass, and the stands provide an excellent view of the action.
