Sunyani is the capital city of the Bono Region and has long held a reputation as one of Ghana's cleanest and most orderly urban centers. The town originated in the 19th century as a camp for elephant hunters, with its name derived from the Akan words 'Osono-dwa', meaning 'place of the elephants'. It rose to administrative prominence during the British colonial era, particularly after a government station was established there in 1906. Today, Sunyani serves as a major agricultural clearinghouse, with the trade of cocoa, kola nuts, and timber driving the local economy. The city is also a distinguished educational hub, home to the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and Sunyani Technical University. Geographically situated in the forest-savanna transition zone, Sunyani benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the coastal regions. Its people take great pride in their Bono-Akan heritage, maintaining strong traditional structures through the Sunyani Traditional Council.
