Operated by Newmont, the world's largest gold producer, the mine commenced commercial production in 2006. Ahafo is one of the largest and most productive mining operations in Africa, encompassing several open pits such as Subika, Apensu, and Awonsu. Since 2018, the site has also incorporated underground mining at the Subika deposit to access deeper, high-grade ore zones. The facility features a state-of-the-art processing plant that utilizes crushing, grinding, and carbon-in-leach (CIL) technology. Newmont has invested heavily in the site, including the Ahafo Mill Expansion project to increase annual throughput. Beyond its economic impact, Ahafo is well-known for its exemplary social programs, such as the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), which supports local communities.
