Aue-Bad Schlema is a significant town in the Saxon Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), created on January 1, 2019, through the merger of the industrial city of Aue and the spa community of Bad Schlema. This union brought together two different heritages: Aue's long-standing prowess in metalworking and machinery, and Bad Schlema's world-renowned history of uranium mining under SDAG Wismut. Following the German reunification, the region underwent a massive ecological transformation, turning former mining sites into lush landscapes. Today, Bad Schlema is a certified radon spa, offering specialized treatments in its modern health facilities. The town is located in the valleys of the Zwickauer Mulde and Schwarzwasser rivers, providing a dramatic natural setting. It is also famous for its local football club, FC Erzgebirge Aue, which enjoys a cult following across Germany. As part of the Ore Mountains Mining Region, Aue-Bad Schlema is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can explore various mining monuments, enjoy the vast spa gardens, or witness traditional miners' parades. The town successfully bridges its industrial past with a future focused on healthcare, tourism, and high-tech manufacturing.
