Grünhain-Beierfeld is a twin town in the Saxon Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), formed by merging the historic monastic town of Grünhain with the industrial village of Beierfeld. Grünhain grew around a powerful Cistercian monastery established in the 13th century, which once governed vast territories in the region. In contrast, Beierfeld became a hub for metalworking, particularly famous for its 'spoon makers' who crafted iron spoons long before the industrial age. The town is now a recognized part of the Ore Mountains Mining Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A modern landmark is the King Albert Tower on the Spiegelwald hill, offering one of the best viewpoints in the entire mountain range. Economically, the town is a powerhouse of automotive component manufacturing and mechanical engineering. Visitors are drawn to its rich mining heritage, the serene atmosphere of the former monastery grounds, and the animated Christmas traditions that define this part of Germany, including elaborate light displays and traditional wood carvings.
