Positioned in the scenic valley of the Weißeritz River, just southwest of Dresden, lies the relatively young city of Freital. Formed in 1921 through the merger of several industrial villages, it now fascinatingly combines a deep-rooted coal mining history with remarkable natural surroundings. The city's landmark is the striking Windberg Monument, perched on the hill of the same name. It serves as a memorial to a tragic mining disaster while offering a phenomenal panoramic view extending all the way to the Elbe Valley. An absolute must-do for railway enthusiasts and romantics is a ride on the Weißeritztalbahn, Germany's oldest narrow-gauge railway still in daily operation. Departing from Freital-Hainsberg, the historic steam locomotives chug their way through the wildly romantic Rabenauer Grund, a spectacular natural gorge defined by rugged cliffs and dense forests. For a journey into the past, visit the photogenic Burgk Castle (Schloss Burgk). This Renaissance estate houses the Municipal Collections, featuring impressive Saxon art, as well as an accessible show mine that vividly demonstrates the grueling conditions of historical underground labor. With the deep rocky gorge of the Plauenscher Grund and countless hiking trails, Freital has an unexpectedly green and adventurous escape.
