Located directly along the busy shipping lane of the Elbe-Havel Canal, Genthin represents an intersection of 20th-century industrial history and the open agricultural landscapes east of the Elbe river. The town gained nationwide fame through its historic detergent factory, where the Henkel company produced massive quantities of the world-famous Persil washing powder starting in the 1920s. Genthin’s most prominent visual landmark is its Water Tower, a striking 48-meter-tall red brick structure built in 1894 in the Neo-Romanesque style. In the compact downtown area, the traditional town hall faces the market square, accompanied by a replica of the iconic "Persil Clock" which commemorates the industrial legacy. Every September, the municipality transforms for the Genthiner Kartoffelfest (Potato Festival), celebrating the region's strong agricultural roots as one of the area's largest folk events. The canal port provides an excellent stopping point for recreational boaters, while the surrounding flat, tree-lined roads are highly favored by cyclists exploring the wider Jerichower Land district.
