Premnitz is located in the Havelland district, west of Berlin. During the 20th century, it transformed from a traditional fishing village into a major industrial town. The pivotal moment came in 1915 with the establishment of the artificial silk industry, which established Premnitz as a powerhouse for synthetic fiber production. This industrial focus continued during the GDR era, making it a key site for chemical fibers. Following German reunification in 1990, the town underwent a significant structural shift and now positions itself as a modern center for energy and green industry. Geographically, Premnitz is defined by the Havel river, which has transitioned from an industrial transport route to a primary attraction for water sports and tourism. The town is situated within the Westhavelland Nature Park, Germany's first designated 'Dark Sky Park.' The town’s urban landscape was greatly enhanced by hosting the Federal Horticultural Show in 2015, resulting in beautiful riverside promenades and improved public parks.
