Highlights of 2026

1

The old Hanseatic city of Gardelegen in northwestern Saxony-Anhalt features an exceptionally well-preserved historic core enveloped by expansive rampart gardens. These former defensive moats were transformed into green promenades during the 19th century, encircling the old town with nearly two and a half kilometers of continuous parkland. Among the most striking architectural landmarks is the 15th-century Salzwedel Gate (Salzwedeler Tor), whose massive twin towers highlight the heavy medieval fortifications. The architectural focal point is the historic town hall, known for its distinct arcades facing the market square, sitting just a short walk from the towering brick Gothic Marienkirche. A local monument pays tribute to the famous cabaret artist Otto Reutter, who was born here. Stretching directly south of the municipality is the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, the largest unpopulated heathland area in Central Europe. Gardelegen effectively acts as the logistical gateway for outdoor excursions into this vast, rugged landscape dominated by pine forests and open sandy clearings.
