Osterburg in the Altmark is a traditional small town that has made a name for itself primarily as a city of libraries and is closely associated with regional asparagus cultivation. The historic town center is characterized by the striking St. Nicolai Church made of red brick, whose origins date back to the late twelfth century. A special attraction located just outside the center is Krumke Castle (Schloss Krumke) with its adjacent castle park. This park stands out for a centuries-old boxwood hedge measuring roughly four hundred meters in length, making it one of the oldest in all of Europe and lending the garden a formal, aristocratic structure. In the spring, particularly in the months of May and June, everything in Osterburg revolves around the well-known Altmark asparagus, which thrives in the sandy soils of the surroundings and is served in numerous variations at local inns. A well-developed network of cycling paths along the Biese river allows for relaxed excursions into the flat surroundings of the Altmark, which are rich in forests and meadows. The town has travelers a quiet blend of agricultural tradition, northern German brick Gothic architecture, and well-maintained garden design.
