Neunkirchen is the second-largest city in Saarland and has a deeply rooted history as a center for the coal and steel industries. For decades, the Neunkirchen ironworks of the industrialist Stumm family shaped the cityscape and the social structure of the entire region. Following the closure of the ironworks in 1982, the city underwent a radical structural change towards a modern trade and service center. A prominent symbol of this transformation is the Saarpark-Center, which was built on the former industrial site and is now one of the largest shopping malls in southwestern Germany. Despite modernization, many industrial monuments have been preserved, such as the historic water towers and the Stumm Church, which now serve cultural purposes. The city is also famous for its zoo, which is one of the oldest and most significant in the region. Today, Neunkirchen serves as an important transport hub and educational site in the east of the state, actively maintaining its heritage as a traditional industrial city.
