Wipperfürth is situated in the Oberbergischer Kreis and holds the distinction of being the oldest city in the Bergisches Land region, with city rights dating back to 1217. The town lies on the upper reaches of the river Wupper, which is locally called the Wipper. During the Middle Ages, it was a flourishing trading hub on the Hanseatic route between Cologne and Dortmund, eventually joining the Hanseatic League itself. The central market square and the Church of St. Nikolaus are focal points of the town, though much of the original timber-framed architecture was lost to several devastating fires in the 18th and 19th centuries. The surrounding landscape is defined by its water infrastructure, featuring several large reservoirs like the Neyetalsperre and Kerspetalsperre, which today serve as critical water management sites and prime recreational areas. Economically, Wipperfürth has established itself as a hub for the cable and electrical industries, hosting several global market leaders, while remaining a tranquil residential area surrounded by the rolling hills of the Bergisches Land.
