Hofgeismar is a historic town in northern Hesse, located against the expansive Reinhardswald forest. It is a key stop on the German Fairy Tale Route, primarily due to the nearby Sababurg Castle, famously associated with the Grimm brothers' tale of Sleeping Beauty. The town itself has a pleasant medieval core, characterized by ornate half-timbered houses and the 14th-century Altstädter Kirche. A significant historical turning point occurred in 1685 when Landgrave Charles invited French Huguenots to settle in the area; their legacy is preserved today in the German Huguenot Museum located in the town center. For centuries, Hofgeismar was an important military garrison town for the Landgraviate of Hesse, resulting in grand 18th and 19th-century military architecture. Modern Hofgeismar is a thriving regional center that balances its historical heritage with nature tourism, offering access to one of Europe's oldest wildlife parks and extensive hiking trails through ancient oak forests.
