Rüthen, often referred to as a mountain town, looks back on a proud history as a Hanseatic city. The town is prominently perched on a sandstone ridge at the northern edge of the Sauerland. The historic old town is surrounded by a massive town wall, which today is among the best-preserved fortifications in the region. For centuries, Rüthen was a center of stonemasonry; the characteristic Rüthen green sandstone was used for numerous significant buildings throughout Westphalia. The town's architecture, featuring the baroque town hall and Gothic churches, reflects its former prosperity. Geographically, Rüthen forms the gateway to the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park, making it a significant location for forestry and nature tourism.
