Highlights of 2026

Lennestadt, located in the Olpe district, is a relatively young city formed in 1969 through communal reorganization, yet its constituent parts have deep historical roots. The city spans several valleys of the Sauerland region and has become an important regional center. For decades, the district of Meggen was shaped by mining; it hosted one of the world's most significant deposits of pyrite, zinc, and lead. The Sachtleben mine was at times the largest of its kind in Europe and fundamentally influenced the social fabric of the entire region. Since mining ended in 1992, Lennestadt has successfully transitioned into a modern industrial location with many medium-sized global market leaders. The city is also a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts, situated in the heart of the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park, offering scenic trails like the Veischeder Sonnenpfad. A cultural highlight is the Karl May Festival in Elspe, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to its elaborate wild west sets.
