Hilchenbach, located in the heavily forested Siegerland on the edge of the Rothaargebirge mountains, is a state-recognized recreation resort. The historic center clusters around the Protestant church and is characterized by slate facades and black-and-white half-timbered houses. Overlooking the town are the ruins of the Ginsburg, a historic 12th-century fortress where William of Orange gathered his troops in 1568 for the Dutch war of independence. Today, the preserved tower has an excellent view of the surrounding valleys. For hikers, Hilchenbach is a central hub, as the well-known Rothaarsteig long-distance trail runs directly through the hilly landscape. The Breitenbachtalsperre reservoir in the surrounding area is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. During the cooler months, locals frequent cozy inns to enjoy a Siegerländer Krüstchen, a schnitzel served on toasted bread and topped with a fried egg. The quiet, low-mountain atmosphere makes the town handy for nature walks and extended trekking tours.
