Varel is the largest city in the Lower Saxony district of Friesland and is characterized by its diverse location between woodland, marshes, and the sea. Historically, Varel was for a long time the residence of the Counts of Aldenburg and Bentinck, a fact still recalled today by the castle church, whose altar and furnishings are among the most important works of art in Northern Germany. A special district is the North Sea resort of Dangast, the oldest seaside resort on the German North Sea coast, which continues to attract artists and tourists alike. Economically, Varel is a major location for the aviation industry, particularly through the Premium AEROTEC plant. In addition, tourism, the food industry, and mechanical engineering play a central role. The city provides diverse leisure opportunities with the Varel forest and the harbor on the Jade Bight.
