Wilhelmshaven is home to Germany's only deep-water container terminal, the JadeWeserPort, which commenced operations in 2012. The port benefits from a fairway depth of 18 metres, allowing even the world's largest container vessels to dock fully loaded, independent of the tides. Historically, the city was planned and built in the mid-19th century as a Prussian naval base, which remains Wilhelmshaven's legacy today as the largest site of the German Navy. What is this place?
Wilhelmshaven hosts Germany's only deep-water port on the North Sea, accessible to large supertankers carrying crude oil. The port plays a central role in German energy supply and international goods traffic.
Visiting
The port is not fully open to the public, but there are viewpoints and visitor centres from which you can see the massive ships and port facilities. Guided tours along the quays are possible with advance booking.
Where to view it
The best viewpoint is the observation tower at Südstrand, offering panoramic views over the entire port and incoming tankers. The pier at Nordstrand is also a popular spot for ship-spotting.
