Schortens is located in the Jeverland region of Friesland, Lower Saxony, just a short distance from the North Sea coast. Granted city status in 2005, it has established itself as a state-recognized health resort, offering a serene alternative to the bustling coastal beaches. The town's cultural heart is Sillenstede, home to St. Florian's Church. This 12th-century granite block structure is one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in the region and houses a renowned organ built by Johann Adam Berner. The Ostringfelde Abbey Park serves as a green reminder of the town's monastic history. Historically, Schortens was an industrial stronghold hosting the Olympia typewriter factory, but it has since evolved into a versatile service-oriented economy. Its proximity to the Wilhelmshaven naval base and its well-preserved Frisian charm make it an attractive location for residents and tourists alike.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
