Runkel is a quintessentially romantic German town located in the Lahn valley between the cities of Limburg and Weilburg. Its most striking feature is Runkel Castle, a formidable 12th-century fortress perched precariously on a limestone cliff directly above the river. Unlike many ruined castles, Runkel remains in the possession of the Princely House of Wied and features a profound look into medieval life, complete with an impressive keep and defensive walls. Directly across the Lahn stands Schadeck Castle, built in the 14th century as a strategic rival to Runkel, creating a rare visual of two fortresses facing each other at close range. These two sides are connected by a majestic medieval stone bridge completed in 1448, which remains a vital link for the town today. The historic core of Runkel is a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with beautifully preserved half-timbered houses. The town is a major hub for eco-tourism, particularly for canoeing and kayaking on the Lahn, as well as hiking in the Westerwald and Taunus regions.
