Speyer on the Upper Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the oldest cities in Germany and was an important imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages. The most prominent building is the Imperial Cathedral, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981 and is considered the largest preserved Romanesque church in the world. The cathedral's crypt contains the tombs of numerous German emperors and kings from the Salian, Staufen, and Habsburg dynasties. Furthermore, Speyer, along with Worms and Mainz, was one of the centers of Jewish life in the Middle Ages, which is also UNESCO-protected today through the preserved ShUM sites. The Speyer Technical Museum displays exhibits such as the Space Shuttle Buran and a Boeing 747 on extensive grounds, making the city a tourist attraction. Annually, the historic Pretzel Festival commemorates the long tradition of the baking trade in the region.
