Münzenberg, often affectionately referred to as the inkwell of the Wetterau, is characterized from afar by the distinctive double towers of its medieval castle. Built in the 12th century, Münzenberg Castle is one of the most important and best-preserved Romanesque fortresses in all of Germany. Those who climb the 116 steps of the eastern keep are rewarded with a vast panoramic view over the hilly landscape of the Wetterau to the Taunus mountains. Below the historic castle walls lies the well-preserved old town with its narrow, winding streets and carefully restored half-timbered houses. The historic market square in particular exudes a quiet, authentic charm that immediately transports visitors back to past centuries. The region around Münzenberg also invites you to take long walks through the agricultural fields and orchards. Nature lovers can explore the nearby nature reserve, while history buffs can walk in the footsteps of the Hohenstaufen emperors. In the cozy country inns in the surrounding area, you can end the day in a relaxed manner with a glass of regional apple wine and a hearty Hessian meal.
