Hungen is located in the Gießen district, positioned at the transition point between the hilly Taunus region and the volcanic landscapes of the Vogelsberg. The town of 12,000 residents officially holds the nickname The Shepherd City, reflecting a centuries-old agricultural tradition. This heritage is celebrated every August with the grand Hessian Shepherd Festival, featuring herding dog competitions and a traditional craft market. In the heart of the old town stands Hungen Castle, a Renaissance complex expanded from the 15th century onwards, which has been extensively restored by a local volunteer association to serve as a cultural center. The three-aisled Protestant town church is notable for its distinct Romanesque western portal. Just a few kilometers outside the town limits runs the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes; a reconstructed Roman watchtower near the Inheiden district serves as a monument to the ancient border fortification. The surrounding landscape of meadows and small woods provides excellent cycling paths, while the nearby Inheidener See features opportunities for sailing and swimming during the summer months.
