Butzbach proudly bears the nickname "Pearl of the Wetterau" and delights visitors with one of the most beautiful historic market squares in Hesse. Framed by magnificent, richly decorated 16th-century half-timbered houses, this historical center around the old town hall forms the beating heart of the small town. It is the excellent place to sit in an outdoor café, soak up the medieval atmosphere, and watch the world go by. However, the town's history stretches back much further: Butzbach lies directly on the ancient Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. Evidence of this Roman past can be found on the nearby Schrenzer hill, where the excavated remains of a Roman fort and a watchtower can be visited. Another prominent landmark is the Landgrave's Castle (Landgrafenschloss), once a grand residence of the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, which is now firmly integrated into civic life. Visitors looking to explore the natural surroundings will find excellent hiking trails in the foothills of the Taunus mountains. The hike up to the Hausbergturm observation tower is highly recommended, rewarding climbers with a sweeping panoramic view over the entire Wetterau region. Butzbach effortlessly blends ancient history with medieval charm.
