Havelberg is a historic Hanseatic town located in the northern part of Saxony-Anhalt, uniquely positioned at the confluence of the Havel and Elbe rivers. Its origins date back to 948, when King Otto I founded a bishopric here to facilitate the Christianization of the Slavic territories east of the Elbe. The town's skyline is dominated by the monumental St. Mary's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque and Gothic architecture situated on a steep hill overlooking the old town. During the Middle Ages, Havelberg thrived as a member of the Hanseatic League, serving as a significant trading hub for regional goods. The historical core is remarkably situated on a 'town island' (Stadtinsel), connected by bridges to the cathedral hill and the surrounding landscape. In recent years, Havelberg has become a recognized resort town, particularly after hosting part of the Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) in 2015. It is also internationally renowned for the Havelberg Horse Market, which has been held for centuries and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every autumn.
