Vohburg an der Donau is situated in Upper Bavaria, approximately 15 kilometers downstream from Ingolstadt. The town's history is deeply rooted in its strategic hilltop position, which has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. During the Middle Ages, it served as a significant residence for the Wittelsbach dukes. The most prominent feature is the castle hill (Burgberg), where remnants of the medieval fortifications, including the historic castle gate and the ring wall, are still visible. Vohburg is famously associated with Agnes Bernauer, the commoner wife of Duke Albert III, who resided here in the 15th century. Geographically, the town is located between the Danube wetlands and the Hallertau hop-growing region. Today, Vohburg is a vital industrial center, hosting one of Europe's most modern oil refineries and significant energy infrastructure. Despite its industrial importance, the town center remains scenic, featuring the historic town hall and St. Peter's Church. The surrounding Danube floodplains provide a unique ecosystem for rare species and offer numerous recreational paths for hikers and cyclists.
