In the early 20th century, the market town became home to famous expressionists such as Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky, whose legacy is kept alive in the Münter House and the Murnau Castle Museum. The town captivates with its easy on the eye pedestrian zone featuring listed facades and numerous galleries. Directly at the gates of Murnau lies the Staffelsee with its seven islands, which invites you to swim, row, and take boat trips in summer. The adjacent Murnauer Moos is the largest contiguous nature reserve of its kind in Central Europe and a paradise for nature photographers and hikers. The region also gives excellent opportunities for mountain bikers and mountaineers. Culinarilly, Bavarian inns pamper guests with specialties such as lake fish and Bavarian beer. Murnau is easily accessible by train (direct connection from Munich) or via the A95 motorway.
