Batumi is Georgia's second-largest city, with around 170,000 inhabitants, and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, lying on the Black Sea coast just 15 kilometres from the Turkish border. The city sits in a subtropical bay between the sea and the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, where the mild climate supports tea plantations, citrus orchards and bamboo. The ancient Greek colony of Bathys once stood on this site; in the 19th century, after annexation by the Russian Empire, Batumi grew into a major oil-shipping port whose pipeline drew investment from both the Nobel and the Rothschild families. Today its skyline mixes modern high-rises with a 7-kilometre seaside boulevard, the kinetic „Ali and Nino“ sculpture, the 130-metre Alphabetic Tower and an Italian-style Piazza. Other landmarks include the Cathedral of the Mother of God, the historic railway station and the vast Batumi Botanical Garden perched on coastal cliffs, one of the largest and oldest in Europe. In summer Batumi turns into Georgia's beach capital, with a lively casino, conference and festival scene.
