Ali and Nino Statue
The Ali and Nino statue is a captivating piece of kinetic art located on the Batumi seaside boulevard, overlooking the Black Sea. Designed by Georgian artist Tamara Kvesitadze and installed in 2010, the two eight-meter-tall metal figures are made of horizontally stacked steel plates. The artwork is inspired by the famous 1937 novel by Kurban Said, which tells the tragic love story of a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and a Christian Georgian princess during the First World War. The sculpture's unique feature is its mechanical movement: every ten minutes, the two figures slowly slide toward each other, momentarily merging into a single form before passing through one another and moving apart again. This cyclical motion beautifully symbolizes the inevitable separation and the complex interplay between different cultures and religions. At night, the statues are illuminated with colorful lights, creating a hypnotic and emotional atmosphere for spectators. Ali and Nino has become an iconic symbol of Batumi, representing not only eternal love but also the hope for peace and understanding between nations.
