Tanji Bird Reserve (Gambia)

Weather…

Tanji Bird Reserve, also known as Karinti, was established in 1993 and covers 612 hectares along the Atlantic coast of The Gambia. It is a vital conservation area that protects a variety of habitats, including coastal dunes, lagoons, mangroves, and dry woodland. The reserve also encompasses the Bijol Islands, which are The Gambia’s only offshore islands and serve as critical breeding grounds for seabirds like the Caspian tern. With over 300 bird species recorded, Tanji is an Important Bird Area (IBA) and a major attraction for ornithologists worldwide. Beyond its avian diversity, the reserve is home to several mammal species and reptiles that thrive in its undisturbed environments. Its proximity to the fishing village of Tanji allows visitors to combine birdwatching with a cultural experience. Conservation efforts aim to protect the delicate coastal ecosystem from urban encroachment and climate change.
