Fort Louvel

Fort Louvel is a historic military fortification in the Gambian capital, Banjul, constructed in 1832 on the city's highest elevation. The fort was built by the British under the direction of Lieutenant Louvel to defend the settlement of Bathurst against mainland attacks during the Soninke-Marabout Wars. The structure originally consisted of a circular wall with embrasures and was mounted with cannons to deter potential invaders. Today, only the ruins of the foundations and part of a commemorative plaque remain, marking the site's former military importance.
